Rustic Farmhouse Folk Art Painted Bridal Cabinet

Exceptional painted bridal wardrobe, dating from around 1780. We have added a photo of the condition in which we found the wardrobe in southern Germany; as you can see, it was hardly a complete piece of furniture at that time. All the decorative moldings, the crest, and the legs were missing, and the wardrobe was completely repainted in a dull, dark brown color. However, under the layers of paint, part of the original, very exceptional painting was visible, which made us absolutely unable to leave this piece behind. The wardrobe is characterized by very bright, vivid colors with special patterns and decorations. The two large flower panels on the doors complete the whole. With the utmost care, we removed the later paint layers, and miraculously we were able to save most of the original painting. Missing parts such as the moldings, legs, and the crest have been added again, using only authentic, old materials. We deliberately did not try to imitate the original painting; in our opinion, it should be visible that this piece has been rescued and restored. The wardrobe has been thoroughly cleaned, fitted with a new working lock, and the occasional old woodworm traces have been carefully checked and treated. This piece of furniture comes from the area around Thalmassing, where we also purchased the wardrobe. It is an authentic and typical example of folk art from this region.
