Antique Chinese console with carved drawers – China, circa 1900

This antique Chinese console with carved wooden drawers, featuring drawer fronts decorated with the openwork huiwen pattern, three lower panels, and an openwork apron, is a domestic piece from northern China around 1900. It originates from northern China during the late Qing period, where local wood was crafted using openwork carving in traditional geometric patterns. The huiwen (回紋) pattern is one of the most consistent decorative elements in Chinese furniture. This continuous straight spiral symbolises eternity and uninterrupted continuity. Its presence on drawer fronts and aprons is typical of domestic furniture from the northern provinces during the Qing Dynasty. The top slightly overhangs at both ends. The two drawers have fronts carved in bas-relief with the huiwen geometric pattern, featuring wrought iron pull rings. Below the drawers, there are three vertically framed panels with straight moulding. The lower apron also displays an openwork geometric decoration. The wood has developed a warm patina with ochre and golden tones, with a more pronounced darkening in the carved reliefs. The wear on the top is consistent with prolonged domestic use. This console fits well in japandi, wabi-sabi, or eclectic orientalist interiors. The decorative richness of the front makes it particularly suitable for an entryway or living room. Details.
