This antique Chinese wooden console with drawers and openwork foliage decoration is a domestic piece from northern China around 1900. It originates from northern China during the late Qing period, where local wood was crafted with openwork carvings of plant and zoomorphic motifs. Consoles with openwork foliage decoration were the most elaborate pieces of domestic furniture in northern China under the Qing Dynasty. The openwork relief carvings of dragons, phoenixes, or plant elements indicated the rank of the piece and the space it occupied. The top extends at both ends. The drawers feature fronts with openwork decorations of plant and zoomorphic motifs. The lower apron also displays openwork decoration of leaves and scrolls. The straight legs retain fragments of the original red lacquer. The wood has developed a dark patina with warm tones. The openwork decoration retains a greater darkness in the inner recesses, creating a contrast with the peaks of the carving. This console is suitable for Japandi, wabi-sabi, or eclectic Orientalist interiors. Its decorative richness makes it particularly well-suited for an entrance or living room. Details.
