This antique Chinese console made of dark lacquered solid wood, with two high drawers and a large front drawer, is a low altar table from northern China around 1900. Low altar consoles were common pieces in northern Chinese homes at the end of the Qing dynasty and the beginning of the Republic. They served as support in the main living area—where they held incense, offering bowls, or cult objects—and as a side table for small utensils. The structure is assembled with blind mortise and tenon joints. A dark red-black lacquer covers the front, now worn unevenly, revealing the warm wood in areas of friction. The two high drawers retain their circular forged iron rings, and a large band drawer closes the centre of the lower front. The patina offers a very rich reading: the dark lacquer covers most of the front with clear losses that reveal the warm tone of the wood underneath. The lower perimeter crosspieces have softened with use. No invasive restoration: the piece retains its rural and honest character. Details. Materials and techniques: Solid wood; original dark lacquer; mortise and tenon joints; forged iron fittings. Place of origin: China. Period: Late Qing dynasty / Republican. Date of manufacture: Around 1900. Dimensions: Length 100 cm – Depth 47 cm – Height 73 cm. Condition: Good. Wear consistent with age and use. Contains scratches or other signs of period use.
