Crafted from a Renaissance albarello, Canthos is a unique table lamp transformed from a 19th-century Italian apothecary jar, likely made between 1870 and 1885. Inspired by 17th-century pharmaceutical containers, the jar is hand-painted with a cobalt and ochre bust flanked by stylised wings and the inscription CANTHOS, probably a reference to an eye remedy. With its pronounced crackled glaze and the decorative date “1684”, this antique table lamp combines classic medicinal traditions with the ornamental sensibilities of the late 19th century, offering a refined accent for interiors steeped in history. The design of the jar illustrates the decorative flair of late 19th-century Italian ceramists, evoking Renaissance pharmacies. Paired with a deep mustard yellow dupion silk drum shade, the lamp balances heritage with bold contemporary design. The rich, textured weave of the shade adds depth and lustre, echoing the ochre embellishments of the jar. Handmade in a European workshop, the lamp is fully wired for use in the USA with free plug customisation for global compatibility.
