Meticulously handcrafted by Amitābha Studio from a 19th-century Italian albarello in Renaissance style (circa 1870-1890), this unique table lamp preserves the spirit of the great traditions of European apothecaries. The ceramic vessel once served as a pharmacy pot, its cartouche inscribed "L MENTHAE" — Latin for "of mint." Mint preparations were prescribed for a wide range of ailments, from indigestion to colds and nervous disorders. The initial letter "L" likely denotes the form of the preparation, such as a liquid extract or infusion. The surrounding scene depicts two figures in a stylised pastoral setting, one carrying a basket, presumably gathering herbs. The lamp is paired with a custom-made drum-shaped lampshade, handcrafted in a workshop near Amsterdam from mustard-coloured Dupion silk, which gives the lamp a beautiful luminosity. The conversion was carried out without altering or damaging the antique vessel in any way. Albarelli like this one were produced in central and northern Italy in the 19th century in deliberate emulation of ancient Renaissance models. Now transformed into a lamp, the piece carries this history into modern interiors. The perfect gift for a doctor, herbalist, pharmacist, medical history collector, or wunderkammer enthusiast.
