This antique Chinese console with drawers, made of lacquered wood, features two drawers with iron half-moon handles and traces of the original red lacquer. It is a side table from northern China, dating to around 1900. It originates from northern China during the late Qing period, when domestic pieces were lacquered in red as a protective and decorative finish. Red lacquer was the most common finish for popular furniture in northern China during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Applied to pine or poplar, it provided durability while integrating the piece into the colour palette of the traditional Chinese home. The top is made of assembled boards with a peripheral moulding. The two drawers have smooth fronts with forged iron half-moon handles. The legs show the most visible traces of the original red lacquer at the drawer and apron, which is partially worn. The patina combines the dark tone of aged wood with fragments of red lacquer remaining on less exposed surfaces. The whole expresses the material honesty of an everyday object. This console is suitable for Japandi, wabi-sabi, or industrial interiors. The presence of residual red lacquer gives it a chromatic character that fits eclectic spaces. Details.
