Victorian desk with leather top, restored.

We are delighted to offer for sale this kidney desk with an impressive bookcase back, fully restored and attributed to Gillow’s of Lancaster. It is one of the finest desks I have ever owned, the original design created by Gillows of Lancaster, with examples sold between £100, 000 and £120, 000 at other dealers. The top was removed and restored by a leather specialist in Brighton, using a unique piece of high-quality bovine leather, embossed with gold leaf featuring an oversized geometric border as well as a twisted border in a second embossing. The top and base were then restored in London by a third-generation French polisher, who repaired the wood losses, cleaned the entire piece, and applied a shellac finish while respecting the original patina. This desk is a true feat of style and design, particularly appealing in a library or office with a bookcase back. Dimensions: Height 77.5 cm, Width 154.5 cm, Depth 80 cm (measured at the widest point). Note that the hand-dyed leather should not be exposed to direct sunlight for long periods to avoid drying and discolouration.
