Small Japanese tansu with three drawers made from Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) and paulownia wood, crafted in Japan during the late Meiji period and early Taishō period, circa 1890–1926. During the Meiji period, Japan experienced rapid modernisation, but domestic furniture continued to be produced using traditional artisanal techniques. Small tansu like this one were used to store textiles, documents, and personal items. The outer structure is made of Japanese cedar, valued for its stability and durability. The drawers are made of paulownia, a lightweight wood traditionally used to protect textiles due to its natural resistance to moisture. The drawer fronts are adorned with wrought iron fittings featuring circular lock plates and curved handles, characteristic of Japanese furniture from the late 19th century. The reinforced metal corners add strength and character. The piece exhibits a beautiful warm patina developed over time. Signs of use and small surface irregularities attest to its authenticity. With its compact dimensions, this piece can be used today as a small accent table, bedside table, or decorative storage unit in a contemporary interior. Details. Object type: Small Japanese tansu.
