Ancient Japanese lacquered kodansu with five drawers, featuring a vertical rectangular body and five stacked drawers at the front, with iron ring handles and an original painted motif that runs across the facades. Originating from Japan during the Meiji period (1868–1912), when small drawer chests—intended for the home office, sewing table, or intimate cabinet—were produced in natural lacquer with hand-painted decoration. The five-drawer kodansu was one of the most common domestic typologies in Meiji Japan. Its compact height made it suitable for placement on tatami, a low table, or another auxiliary piece of furniture; the five drawers allowed for the classification of jewellery, threads, stationery, or coins according to a clear hierarchy. The painted decoration—subtle and allegorical—distinguished the piece within a furniture setting of muted tones. Details. Dimensions: Length 26 cm – Depth 28 cm – Height 36 cm.
