This tansu (kimono cabinet) is made of solid keyaki wood for the front, with lighter wood sides stained black. It consists of two modules of identical dimensions: 88 x 54 x 45 cm. The style combines strength, simplicity, and Eastern influence - the robust and ornate fittings are characteristic of the Meiji era, the second half of the 19th century. The circular fittings are adorned with butterflies, which is a crest ("kamon") of a Japanese clan. (see comparison in photo A) Condition: due to its age, this piece shows wear, scratches, and dents on the sides and top - the fittings are pitted. The small compartment on the right does not close completely - there are no keys. The horizontal part between the two small interior drawers has some play (see photo B) - there is a square hole under one drawer (not visible). The tops have wear and scratches. This piece embodies "wabi sabi," a concept cherished by the Japanese: Wabi means simplicity, melancholy - "sabi" refers to the alteration of time, the appreciation of aged things, the patina of objects.
