Coming from Vallauris, this Provençal town steeped in history where Picasso once worked with clay and where Roger Capron left his mark, this coffee table from the 1960s embodies the spirit of mid-century French design. The top is adorned with Capron's iconic ceramic tiles, all handcrafted in Vallauris. The geometric floral pattern unfolds in earthy browns, ochres, and ivories, highlighted by a warm solid wood frame. The rounded edges soften the silhouette of the table, while the interplay of matte and glossy finishes adds depth to the surface. Four cylindrical legs support the piece, anchoring the lyrical pattern that crowns it. An engraved stamp, "Capron Vallauris France, " attests to its origin. Roger Capron (1922-2006) redefined ceramics in the post-war era, infusing new vitality into an ancient craft. After studying in Paris, he settled in Vallauris in 1946, co-founded the Atelier Callis, and worked alongside contemporaries like Picasso and Jean Derval. Capron absorbed the pottery traditions of the region and transposed them into modern forms—tiles, vessels, and ultimately, furniture that combined utility with art. In the 1960s, his tables were no longer mere surfaces but compositions—landscapes of glazed stoneware that brought the warmth of Provence into the modern home. They speak of optimism: durable, joyful, meaningful. This piece, with its floral motif, is both a functional piece of furniture and a ceramic art object, a lasting testament to the heritage of Vallauris and Capron's unique vision. Condition: This coffee table is in excellent condition for its age.
