The work showcases typical characteristics of 18th-century iconography dedicated to Franciscan saints: The protagonist is a Franciscan saint, recognizable by his brown habit, captured in a moment of spiritual ecstasy, his gaze turned towards divine light amidst clouds and cherubs. An angel is visible in the bottom left, a recurring element in glorious representations of saints from that time, emphasizing their connection to the divine. Works presenting this specific composition are often dated to the first half of the 18th century. It may be difficult to determine the identity of the saint; Saint Seraphim of Montegranaro Seraphin (1540-1604) was a humble lay brother of the Order of Capuchin Friars, known for his deep piety and simplicity. An almost identical work in composition and style is preserved in the collections of the Ministry of Culture. Other common interpretations for similar subjects, though less precise in this case, include Saint Francis of Assisi receiving the stigmata or Saint Joseph of Cupertino in ecstasy, themes very frequent in Italian religious painting. The painting is in excellent condition, relined and equipped with a Wood lamp. It shows no significant pictorial restoration. The work is of excellent pictorial quality.
