Ancient painting "Moses Brings Forth Water from the Rock" 17th century

Oil on canvas. French school, late 17th century. The painting is inspired by one by Nicolas Poussin, created around 1635 and currently on loan to the National Gallery of Edinburgh. However, compared to this work, ours has many variations and is much smaller (the entire right side of Poussin's scene, rich in figures in the foreground and background, has been removed). The subject depicts a biblical episode from the Book of Exodus: the people of Egypt wandered in the desert of Sinai and were lacking water; God then commanded Moses to take his staff, gather the elders, and strike the rock at Horeb in front of the people: a spring of water gushed forth, allowing everyone to quench their thirst. The presented painting has been restored and relined in the past. It is displayed in a frame from the late 19th century.
