COD 01190. A splendid 19th-century Flemish painting. This painting oil on canvas, first canvas, depicts Christ carrying the Cross surrounded by a powerful group of penitent figures. Clearly inspired by Anton van Dyck's masterpiece, the artwork effectively echoes the Flemish master's celebrated compositional style, characterized by close-up figures and a strong emotional interplay between them. Christ, wrapped in his traditional red cloak, emerges with noble composure, while the surrounding figures, gathered in poses of devotion and repentance, accentuate the scene's pathos through a refined interplay of gestures and gazes. The pictorial quality reveals a 19th-century academic hand, with soft, carefully modeled flesh tones and a warm, harmonious palette that translates the Flemish Baroque language into a smoother, more idealized style. A visually striking painting, ideal for formal settings, whether classic or contemporary. Elegant, beautifully decorated 20th-century frame in carved and gilded wood. It has some small paint losses and signs of aging, but is overall in fair condition. Internal dimensions: H 110 X W 134.5 cm.
