Antique buffet painted in pine wood – China, circa 1930

This antique painted pine buffet features two doors with painted panels of peonies in red and turquoise on a cream background, framed by vertical friezes on either side. It originates from north-west China, from the late Qing dynasty, where pine was crafted using traditional mortise and tenon joinery. Painted furniture from north-west China is recognised by its light palette—cream and off-white backgrounds—and the recurring presence of the peony as a motif. The peony (mudan 牡丹), queen of flowers, symbolised wealth and honour; painting it on domestic facades was a daily act of good fortune. This type of two-door buffet with painted panels is found in the homes of the oases in the Hexi corridor. The body is constructed from solid pine. The front is divided into two identical doors with a peripheral frame and a painted panel in the centre. Vertical painted friezes featuring yellow and green plant motifs run alongside the doors. The lower rail retains traces of a softly painted landscape. The handles are circular brass. The assembly is traditional Chinese mortise and tenon, without screws. The painted compositions depict bouquets of pink and red peonies (mudan) on turquoise foliage, with free black outlines. The palette combines cream, pink, vermilion red, blue-green, and black. The yellow vertical friezes add a graphic accent that frames each panel. The floral iconography belongs to the domestic repertoire of good fortune. Details.
