This antique painted pine sideboard, featuring two doors with floral compositions on a cream background, is a domestic piece from northern China circa 1930. It originates from northern China, from the late Qing period or early Republic, where pine was lacquered in light colours and decorated with hand-painted floral motifs. Painted pine sideboards with floral patterns were a common production in the northern provinces of China during the transition between the Qing Dynasty and the Republic. The light palette on a cream background reflected the decorative taste of the modernisation period. The case is made of solid pine with mortise and tenon joinery. The two doors display hand-painted floral compositions: branches of white and pink flowers, likely plum and chrysanthemum, on a cream background. The lower drawers also feature small floral motifs. The hardware is made of brass. The floral painting has developed a translucent patina that gives it a visual softness. The background lacquer has uniformly lost its shine. The honesty of the aging is part of the piece's appeal. Details. Dimensions: Length 165 cm – Depth 44 cm – Height 84 cm. Style: Qing Dynasty.
