Wood sculpture created in direct carving with a chisel by Kou Wakabayashi. Kou Wakabayashi is part of a generation of post-war Japanese sculptors who explore direct carving and the dialogue between traditional craftsmanship and formal modernity. His work is characterised by a particular attention to the rhythm of volumes and the tactile presence of the material. Carved from a single block of solid wood, the composition revolves around a central circular volume flanked by angular side planes. The surfaces are deliberately left vibrant, marked by the regular traces of the chisel, affirming the gesture and materiality. The balance between solid masses and taut lines gives the whole piece a strong architectural presence. Unique signed work. Japan, circa 1970. Exhibited at the International Biennale, Fiorentino Prize, Florence, 1971.
