Sculptural side table made from solid elm root or stool. Europe, 1960s-70s. A sculptural side table - or stool - carved from a single trunk of elm, combining a clear geometric upper block with the natural shape of the tree's root base. The lower part retains the organic contours of the root bulge, creating a lovely contrast with the structured silhouette above. The piece features a warm colour, and the solid elm wood shows visible rings on the top. Natural cracks and subtle irregularities have been preserved, highlighting the expressive qualities of the solid wood. Likely a work from a Dutch or Belgian workshop from the 1960s-70s, a period when cabinetmakers opted for more organic approaches, using the natural shape of the tree as a guide for the final form. This functional and sculptural piece is suitable as a side table, pedestal, or standalone object.
