Ancient Japanese tansu of the choba-tansu type made from keyaki wood (Japanese zelkova) with wrought iron fittings, dated between the end of the Meiji period and the beginning of the Taishō period, circa 1880–1920. The choba-tansu was an essential piece of furniture in Japanese merchant homes. It was used to store documents, accounting records, money, and valuables, functioning both as an archive and a domestic safe. The outer structure is made from keyaki (Zelkova serrata), a highly valued wood in Japanese furniture for its durability and distinctive grain. The interiors of the drawers are traditionally made from paulownia (kiri), a lightweight and stable wood ideal for preserving textiles and documents. The facade features a characteristic asymmetrical composition with drawers of varying sizes, vertical compartments, and a large lower drawer. This organisation allowed for the storage of different types of objects within a single piece of furniture. The elaborate wrought iron fittings reinforce the structure while also serving as an important decorative element. The plates, handles, and corner reinforcements reflect the metallurgical tradition associated with tansu manufacturing during the Meiji period. The surface shows a deep patina with signs of use, a result of the passage of time and daily use. These marks contribute to the authentic character of ancient Japanese furniture.
