Spanish bargueño cabinet from the 19th century Vargas
Measurements: Base: 100x40cm - H: 78cm / Cabinet: 101.5x37.5cm - H: 64cm Cabinet + Base: H: 142cm. The wooden base is an addition from the early 20th century; it is also Spanish and, despite the age difference, complements the piece well in both color and quality. Origin: Spain, mainly associated with the Baroque period and inspired by Moorish art (Mudejar). Made of carved walnut, partially painted and adorned with bone inlays and openwork iron on the sides. It features a multitude of small drawers and central doors, richly decorated with geometric and architectural motifs. As the bargueño was originally a portable piece of furniture intended for travel, some examples were covered in leather. There was a specific Spanish tradition that used the famous Cordovan leather (guadamecil) to cover the exterior of the piece. — please refer to the photographs.
