COD 11556. Antique Italian painting from the second half of the 17th century. Artwork oil on canvas depicting a biblical subject, Moses saved from the waters, of excellent pictorial quality. The painting unfolds horizontally, beautifully scaled and proportioned, and is adorned with a non-contemporary carved and gilded wooden frame (gilding restored during restoration). The painting depicts the rescue of Moses by Princess Bithia, daughter of the Pharaoh. Along with the princess, the painter includes four elegant young women holding the child, just removed from the woven wooden basket. To Bithia's left, a young page boy holds up her robes and a counselor with a distinctive headdress enriches the scene (see photo). A glimpse on the right also shows the banks of the Nile. Given its generous size, this painting would easily fit into any room in the home, making it a favorite with antique dealers, interior decorators, and collectors of ancient art. The artwork has undergone expert conservative restoration, including relining, replacement of the stretcher, and restoration of color in small areas (see photo). The painting is in overall good condition. Internal size H 72 X W 87.5 cm.
