Oil on canvas. The work is a reinterpretation of the famous painting by Francesco Trevisani, now housed in the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica at the Palazzo Barberini. In this version, small images have been added to the bottom right and left. The Virgin Mary is depicted in a dual gesture: with one arm, she tenderly supports the sleeping Child Jesus, leaning against her, his hand resting on a red apple, a symbol of salvation (the apple recalls original sin); with the other hand, Mary holds a book, presumably a book of prayers, which she reads with intense concentration. Thus, the human, corporeal, and spiritual dimensions of Mary are represented. Having already undergone restoration and relining, the painting is presented in a period frame.
