Antique Chinese high buffet in carved pine, with two doors and two interior shelves, originating from Gansu province and dated around 1930. An elegant provincial piece, halfway between a tall bedroom cabinet and a decorative living room buffet, representative of furniture from north-west China (Gansu) in its most refined vertical interpretation. In traditional Gansu homes, high buffets presided over marital bedrooms or main rooms, where fine textiles, personal clothing, and everyday valuables were kept. The vertical proportion—nearly one metre in height—and the organisation into two door-drawers offer logical compartmentalisation. The subtle geometric carvings reflect the refined taste of the region, which sought elegance without excessive ornamentation. Pine was the preferred wood of Gansu. Details.
