Antique three-drawer wooden commode – Central Europe, around 1870
Antique three-drawer wooden chest of drawers, in the Biedermeier tradition, originating from Central Europe and dated around 1870. The top, with a molded edge, crowns a carved frieze of flutes that runs across the entire front. The three-drawer chest is the quintessential domestic furniture of 19th-century Central Europe: it stored linens and everyday items in bedrooms and living rooms. This piece retains the Biedermeier sobriety in a volume with straight lines and allows the materials to speak. The three drawers close with turned black knobs and oval brass plates. On each side, turned columns, also black, frame the front and rest on faceted plinths. The body rests on four ball feet above a straight base. The drawers are assembled with dovetail joints, and the interior is made of light wood. The wood has a warm honey tone and a well-defined grain, with gentle wear on the top and edges. It functions as a chest of drawers in a bedroom, as a low buffet in a dining room, or as an entryway piece, at just the right height to place a lamp or a mirror. Details.
