Exceptional Chinese lacquer commode — Louis XV style — 19th / early 20th century. A piece of rare sophistication that holds a magnificent surprise: sober and elegant when closed, it reveals an unexpectedly rich interior upon opening its doors. This superb Louis XV style commode features a deep reddish-brown Chinese lacquer on the front, adorned with gilded scenes of typically oriental lakeside landscapes: pagodas, figures, boats, and exotic vegetation unfold across the entire surface with remarkable finesse of execution. However, it is upon opening that the piece reveals its exceptional character: the inner faces of the doors unveil a beautifully vibrant blue lacquer, animated by scenes of equestrian battles of remarkable vigour — armoured riders, warriors brandishing their weapons, banners in the wind — all treated with a freedom of line and expressiveness that testify to a first-rate lacquer artist. High-quality gilded bronzes — The gilt bronze mounts are finely chiselled in the Louis XV style: leafy corner drops, cabriole legs, handles, and lock entries in rocaille. Their meticulous execution is characteristic of the fine productions of the late 19th century. A veined marble top with moulded edges adds nobility and balance to the whole.
