Overview. Elegant pair of Biedermeier shovel chairs from Austria, circa 1820. Continuous curved arm-and-back (shovel) silhouette typical of the period. Design. Walnut veneered and solid frame with a warm brown finish. Tapered square front legs, slightly curved rear legs and turned front leg details with small brass casters. Removable seat cushions and decorative brass/tack trim around the seat edge. Materials. Walnut frame and veneer combined with original black leather upholstery on seat and back. Metal hardware used for casters and trim. Provenance. Austrian manufacture, circa 1820, Biedermeier style — restrained, clean lines representative of the era.
