Title. Pair of black velvet and walnut Biedermeier shovel-back dining chairs with ink-painted inlay. Overview. Set of two neoclassical Biedermeier shovel-back chairs, South Germany, circa 1830. Distinctive shovel-shaped backs with a large ink-painted maple-veneer inlay across the top rail. Materials. Walnut veneered and solid-wood frames with ebony inlaid trim band. Maple veneer used for the backrest inlay; seats upholstered in black structured velvet with double keder. Origin & Period. South Germany, early 19th century (Biedermeier period, production before 1890). Design language: restrained neoclassical ornament typical of Biedermeier seating. Dimensions.
