This superb 19th-century British military campaign chest is an officer's chest known as "campaign" or "naval." It is designed in two stackable parts for easy transport on muleback or by boat during military movements. Made of solid mahogany, it features typical brass corner reinforcements and recessed drawer handles intended to prevent snags and breakages during transport. The 17th Lancers is one of the most prestigious and famous cavalry regiments in the British Army, globally known for its heroic and tragic participation in the Charge of the Light Brigade during the Crimean War (1854). The date of 1839 places this piece in the pre-Crimean Victorian era, a period highly sought after by British and international collectors.
