Summary. Stately large Biedermeier secretaire from South Germany, circa 1830. Cherry veneer with contrasting pale maple inlay and a marquetry emblem. Brass fittings and iron locks and keys. Materials. Cherry veneered on softwood with solid cherry columns. Interior fittings in maple with inlays in ebony (likely bog oak) and pewter. Lower drawer in root-wood veneer. Interior. Hinged fall-front opens to a fitted writing interior with pigeonholes and small drawers. Rear compartment contains original mirror and two ebonized columns framing the space. Details. Solid carved Corinthian capitals on the columns and a protruding plinth drawer with book-matched veneer and Karnies curve. Cast brass knobs, escutcheons and a low brass gallery with small turned finials along the top edge. Stands on short bracket feet. Dimensions. Height: 184 cm. Width: 119 cm.
