Secretary in precious wood marquetry, Napoleonic III period – Mid 19th century

Napoleon III secretary of exceptional quality, adorned with marquetry of rosewood and mahogany. The dynamic façade, which simulates a week planner, highlights the rosewood leaves arranged like butterfly wings surrounded by brass rods encircled with mahogany, offering a deep and refined contrast. The ornamentation is complemented by finely chiselled bronze fittings: drops, mouldings, ingot holders, lock entries, and intricately crafted keys, which enhance the decorative and precious character of the piece. The upper section opens with a flap equipped with a functional lock and its ornate key. The interior, in mottled maple, features a large niche and four drawers inlaid with blackened wood fillets, each fitted with small pull knobs. The flap is covered in black leather adorned with a gilded vignette and a central motif, providing a beautiful writing space. The secretary has four large drawers with similarly marqueted fronts, each equipped with a chiselled bronze lock entry and an ornate key. It is topped with a curved mahogany surface, bordered by an ingot holder. The uprights are enhanced with bronze drops at both the top and bottom, and the base features a bronze fitting in the centre.
