Biedermeier Box in Walnut on Oak, South Germany, 1850

Overview. Large, high-quality late Biedermeier casket box from South Germany, circa 1840–1850. Distinctively restrained Biedermeier silhouette with a low, rectangular form. Materials. Walnut veneer over maple on an oak carcass with numerous inlays in precious woods including ebony and dyed wood. Fitted with brass escutcheon, iron lock, brass hinges and a small top lift. Decoration. Oval inlaid motif of a peasant couple on the lid, set on a deep ebony background. Small black knob with a white dot provides a subtle accent. Condition & Restoration. Restored and hand-polished with shellac. Surface has been polished and refinished; patina and minor wear are consistent with age and period use. Dimensions. Height: 15 cm. Depth: 23 cm.
