Overview. Large late Biedermeier box, hand-made in Austria, circa 1850. Simple, low-profile rectangular form with a veneered top panel. Materials. Veneered in walnut with a walnut-burl panel on the lid. Thick stained beechwood used for the interior carcass. Interior. Interior lined with patterned paper in blue, green and red tones. Generous internal volume for a keepsake or jewellery box. Hardware. Ebonized knob on the lid, pressed brass mount and handle, brass hinges. Fitted escutcheon and keyhole with a double lock mechanism. Dimensions. Height: 14 cm. Width: 28.2 cm. Depth: 21.5 cm. Origin. Austria, production circa 1850, Late Biedermeier period.
