A monumental Spanish painting from the second half of the 19th century. This oil-on-canvas work—retaining its original canvas—is signed “A. Casanova” at the bottom center and depicts an evocative woodland landscape featuring deer. It is a large-scale piece of remarkable artistic quality, in which the imposing scale of the trees and the depth of the vegetation create an immersive view. The composition opens onto a clearing with uneven terrain, where rocks, exposed roots, and small shrubs guide the eye into the heart of the forest. A stag with branching antlers emerges in a sunlit area, while a second deer appears further back. To the right, a pool of water reflects the shadows of the trees and leads toward a bright opening between the trunks. The foliage, rendered with small, layered brushstrokes, blends deep greens, golden yellows, and coppery hues, evoking an autumnal atmosphere. The painting reflects a sensibility aligned with the Romantic and Naturalistic traditions of 19th-century European landscape art.
