Jacobus theodorus abels (1803-1866) drawing in brown ink and pen on paper, brown and grey wash "shepherds and their flocks" signed lower right provenance: estate of professor emile aron (1907-2011) at the rouillac sale of 19 and 20 february 2012, lot 102 wooden frame and gilded stucco, under glass dimensions with frame: 47.5x59cm dimensions without frame: 33x45cm good condition (foxing at the top right) *jacobus theodorus "jacob" abels (1803–1866) was a well-known dutch moonlight painter of the romantic period. He began as a painter of summer landscapes, but after his travels he concentrated on river views in moonlight paintings. Abels was born in amsterdam in 1803. He was a pupil of the animal painter jan van ravenswaay. In 1826 he had travelled to germany and on his return settled in the hague. His wife was the daughter of pg os. Between 1849 and 1853 he lived in haarlem and later moved to arnhem. He was particularly known for his paintings of moonlit landscapes. The haarlem museum has works by him.
