Mebel Clam ashtray from the 1970s by Alan Fletcher in white. Iconic "Clam" ashtray design by Alan Fletcher (1931-2006) manufactured by Mebel in Italy in 1972. This clam-shaped ashtray resembles a Dutch Edam cheese with serrated edges that serve to hold the halves together or to grip the cigarette. Synthesising the graphic traditions of Europe and North America to develop a spirited, lively, and highly personal visual style, Alan Fletcher is one of the most influential figures in British graphic design, being the founder of Fletcher/Forbes/Gill in the 1960s and Pentagram in the 1970s. Fletcher's Clam ashtray is in perfect condition with signs of use. Each piece bears the manufacturer's signature and Alan Fletcher's. Diameter 15.5 cm / 6.1" Height 7.5 cm / 3" Weight 0.4 kg.
