Secretary with a black lacquered drop-leaf and gilded bronzes – Boulle style

Secretary with a drop-down front in black lacquered wood and gilded bronze – Boulle style, mid-19th century Dimensions: H 141 × W 81 × D 40 cm Elegant secretary with a drop-down front in black lacquered wood, in Boulle style, dating from the mid-19th century. Its sober and architectured silhouette is beautifully enhanced by rich gilded bronze ornamentation, including mask drop finials, beaded mouldings, lock entries, drop handles, corner appliqués, and feet, in the purest spirit of the ceremonial furniture of the Napoleonic III era inspired by the models of cabinetmaker André-Charles Boulle. The piece is topped with an elegant veined black marble top, adding contrast and refinement. The drop-down front, adorned with a gilded bronze frame and a prominent central motif, opens to reveal a fully fitted interior with a tier, six small drawers, a central drawer, and a writing surface covered in burgundy velvet. This arrangement offers a workspace that is both practical and elegant. The lower part consists of three front drawers, while an additional drawer is located beneath the marble. The drawers are dovetail jointed, demonstrating careful craftsmanship. The whole is enhanced with locks and finely chiselled bronze fittings. The secretary shows a beautiful original patina. Some light signs of use, consistent with its age, are visible without detracting from its presentation quality or functionality. An elegant and decorative piece, ideal for an office, library, or classic interior, combining the refinement of French furniture with remarkable quality of execution.
