This painting represents Saint Francis of Assisi receiving the stigmata or in mystical ecstasy. An ancient religious work from the 17th century, in baroque style, it is characterised by a strong contrast of shadow and light (chiaroscuro). Details of the painting: Saint Francis is depicted kneeling in prayer, arms outstretched and gaze turned towards the sky. This posture and the nocturnal representation are typical of depictions of the stigmata of Saint Francis, a miraculous event during which he received the five wounds of Christ in his hands, feet, and side. These works often include the vision of a seraph or a crucifix, suggested here by the luminous clouds. The style reflects a dramatic use of light to emphasise the spiritual intensity and emotion of the saint. Similar works have been attributed to Italian artists of the 17th century, influenced by Neapolitan painting and central Italian painting. The painting is in excellent condition, never restored on its original canvas.
