We are delighted to present this magnificent original Victorian children's education chair with period cabinetry and twisted cord seat, designed by Astley Cooper in 1835. This chair, known as the 'Astley Cooper', was invented by Sir Astley Paston Cooper (1768-1841), a surgeon and anatomist, to correct poor posture in children: the design of the chair forces children to sit properly, with their backs straight and heads held high, promoting a dignified and elegant posture. Widely used in Victorian classrooms or nurseries, it also served as a punishment, forcing the child to remain in an upright position with no possibility of fidgeting. This example dates from around 1840 and is in its original condition, similar to a model displayed at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Dimensions: Height 96 cm, seat height 52.5 cm, width 38 cm (at the feet), depth 38 cm (at the feet). Please refer to the photos for a detailed view of its condition. Vintage items like this naturally show signs of use and wear on the leather, such as cracks and creases. We recommend regular polishing to preserve moisture and to avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight to prevent drying out or discolouring the leather.
