Antique Japanese storage box with drawers and a hinged lid, made from Japanese chestnut (Castanea crenata) and Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica), Japan, early Showa period, circa 1928. This type of small storage box was part of everyday Japanese furniture in the early 20th century. It was used to store documents, tools, personal items, or small household accessories, while taking up very little space. The main structure is made from Japanese chestnut, a solid and durable wood traditionally used in furniture and architecture. The drawers are made from Japanese cedar, which is lighter and valued for its stability and ease of sliding. The front features two small upper drawers and a wider lower drawer, framed by decorative brass fittings that reinforce the corners and add character to the piece. The hinged lid allows access to an upper compartment intended for larger items. The surface shows a warm patina developed over time. The signs of use, irregularities in the wood, and natural wear testify to the long utilitarian life of the object and enhance its authenticity. Today, this type of Japanese box is highly valued as a decorative object and compact storage furniture. Its balanced proportions and understated aesthetic allow it to easily integrate into contemporary interiors. Details. Dimensions: Length: 24 cm Depth: 34 cm Height: 26 cm. Style: Showa.
