I lived in South Korea for 4 years, where I bought this traditional Korean chest in 1987, dating from the mid-19th century (late Joseon dynasty). It comes from Jeju Island, which I visited many times. It consists of a rectangular body made of Asian elm, with metal fittings and handles in the shape of stirrups, and a typical Korean lock. It rests on a scalloped base. The upper panel at the front is articulated, using 2 metal handles in the shape of stirrups, around 5 worked metal hinges. It is flanked by decorative plates at the corners and is secured to the chest's roof by a dovetail plate with a front lock. The lower panel features numerous decorative plates of different shapes. The sides and the back panel are mortised. Each side is also equipped with a metal handle in the shape of a stirrup. The condition is good, with wear and patina due to time, as well as some scratches and small cracks.
