Kai Kristiansen, Danish designer of the no. 42 chair
Kai Kristiansen (born 1929) is one of the most prolific Danish designers of the post-war era, a pupil of Kaare Klint at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. For fifty years, he signed for Magnus Olesen, Schou Andersen, Feldballes Møbelfabrik and FM Møbler chairs, tables, sideboards and storage systems in teak and rosewood. His no. 42 chair (1956) for Schou Andersen, with V-shaped back and upholstered seat, remains his most identifiable piece. A Scandinavian signature whose rigour has crossed the decades.
The no. 42 chair Schou Andersen and the FM Møbler modular system remain Kai Kristiansen's most recognisable pieces. Scandinavian vintage furniture to find for those wanting a precise Danish signature, at still very accessible prices compared to Wegner or Juhl.
