Mahogany Cylinder Desk, Restoration Period – Part 1 of the 19th Century

This Restoration period cylinder desk with a shelf is crafted from solid mahogany and Cuban mahogany veneer. It opens at the top with a shelf composed of three drawers, all lockable and mounted with dovetail joints, demonstrating meticulous cabinetmaking. Beneath this shelf, a lockable cylinder conceals a spacious interior. This space is furnished with a central niche and three small drawers on the front, veneered and decorated with lemonwood fillets. The knobs of these drawers are finely carved in bone, adding a precious touch to the overall effect. Just below, a retractable shelf covered in refinished green leather unfolds. This leather is adorned with gilded friezes and a central motif, while the edge of the shelf is molded and grooved. The sides of the desk are also equipped with shelves covered in the same green leather, providing additional work surfaces. The lower section of the desk opens to reveal four drawers, each with its own lock. The double drawer on the right serves as a cash drawer: it contains a removable tray divided into four compartments and conceals a second lock providing access to a secret compartment at the bottom. Finally, the whole rests on four sculpted legs, adorned with seven sharp-edged grooves, molded and finished with balls, giving this piece a classic elegance and great stability. ********** Period: Early 19th century.
