Post-impressionist painting by Henri WALBERT Oil on canvas 1920
I propose an astonishing and rare work signed by WALBERT for Henri WALBERT (1898-1948). This oil on canvas depicts an antique Victorian doll in the United Kingdom. This interior piece stands out for its aesthetic that oscillates between classic figurative realism and a modern, synthetic interpretation of the subject. An antique doll dressed in a long dress in olive green and cream tones is situated at the centre of the composition. Adorned with flounces, this voluminous dress is complemented by a fitted bodice and long sleeves. The head is topped with a bonnet with upturned edges that matches the dress. This doll, seated on a bed, is placed in front of a large open parasol that acts as a halo, serving as a natural frame for the character, thus isolating the subject from the rest of the space. This parasol is dominated by shades of old rose (rare) and black, creating a chromatic contrast with the softer, silkier tones of the doll. A section of wall and a curtain in blue and beige tones to the right complete the background. The doll's face, treated in a sober and almost dark manner, accentuates a certain emotional distance while allowing the imagination to run free. Dimensions of the work: 41 cm X 33 cm. Dimensions of the frame: 49 cm X 41 cm. Henri WALBERT (1898-1948) was a multifaceted artistic personality. He is listed as an architect and a graduate of the École des Beaux-Arts in PARIS. He later became a well-rounded artist and very active in the visual arts of his time. He was also recognised for his talent as a watercolourist, having been a professor in this specialty at the School of Fine Arts in FONTAINEBLEAU. WALBERT's work can be found in public collections such as the National Centre for Visual Arts in PARIS and in auction houses, confirming that he was a recognised and active painter during the first half of the 20th century. This work is in perfect condition.
