Giuseppe Angelelli 1803-1844. Ink drawing on paper, inscribed: Study of women drawing water, G. Angelelli from nature, Thebes, Egypt, with some other sketches by the artist on the back. Measures 22 X 14 cm, frame 25 X 31 cm. ANGELELLI, Giuseppe He was born on 7 December 1803 in Coimbra (Portugal) to Piero, a Roman, and Carolina Grifoni, a Florentine; he followed his parents to Brazil in 1807 and to Peru in 1816, then to France and England. In 1818, he settled in Florence where he attended the drawing schools of Pietro Benvenuti and Pietro Ermini at the Academy. In 1827, he was called to be part, as a designer, of the expedition to Egypt promoted by the Tuscan government and led by the archaeologist Ippolito Rosellini. His work as a draughtsman (1828-1829) was used for the engravings, partly made by him, of Rosellini's work (The Monuments of Egypt and Nubia, Atlas, 3 vols., Pisa 1832, 1834, 1844). Upon returning to Florence, he was commissioned by the Grand Duke to paint the members of the Franco-Tuscan expedition on the ruins of Thebes (Florence, Archaeological Museum). He also painted landscapes and African portraits (Portrait of his wife, Self-portrait). He died on 4 November 1844.
