Phriné before the Areopagus, circa 1930. Oil on canvas mounted on cardboard. Signed at the bottom right. 45 X 32 cm. Framed (with some marks) Very good condition. Artist rated by Artprice. Paul Alexandre Hannaux (1897-1954) was a French painter, illustrator, and decorator, a student of the Beaux-Arts (Ernest Laurent's studio), and the winner of the Prix de Rome in 1924. He is known for his Orientalist scenes, nudes, and illustrations — he notably illustrated Prometheus by Aeschylus and The Charterhouse of Parma. This is a very typical studio sketch of his style: quick, impasto brushwork, almost expressionist, far removed from the polished academicism of Gérôme. He revisits the myth but in his own, more modern way.
