Pine wedding chest, hand-painted and dated 1889, in the tradition of Central European folk art. A domestic bridal piece that sits between a marriage arch and a linen chest, representative of late 19th-century Central European folk art. In the Alpine and Carpathian regions, the painted chest was part of the trousseau that a young girl brought to her marriage. It contained textiles, embroidered clothing, and small personal items prepared over many years. The polychromy was never decorative by chance: each motif—tulips, bouquets, garlands—referred to a popular iconography related to fertility, home protection, and new life. It is constructed from pine boards joined at the corners and reinforced with internal crosspieces. The flat lid opens on forged iron hinges and retains its original lock plate. The façade is structured by two finely carved side pilasters and a central panel that contains the main body of the painted decoration. The sides, also polychromed, complete the decorative programme.
