Polychrome pine chest of popular art from Central Europe – Central Europe, dated 1832

Central European popular art chest made of pine wood with original geometric and floral polychromy, dated 1832. A heritage piece that lies between a linen chest and a bedroom wardrobe, representative of Alpine popular art from the first third of the 19th century in its most narrative and decorated interpretation. In rural homes of Central Europe during the first third of the 19th century, the chest was not only a functional storage object but also a prominent piece of furniture in the main room. The polychromy—with its geometric, floral, and narrative motifs—was an expression of family identity and the craftsmanship of the local painter. The date engraved in the wood, 1832, anchors the piece in a very specific moment of the artisanal tradition. It is constructed from pine boards joined at mitre joints and reinforced with internal crosspieces. The flat lid opens on forged iron hinges and retains its central lock plate or original closing mechanism. The front and sides are organised into polychrome cartouches with geometric and floral motifs—roses, lines, frets, small scenes—that combine several tones against a dark background.
