Wedding chest in pine with painted tulips – Central Europe, 1891

Wedding chest made of pine wood, hand-painted with floral motifs and dated 1891. A piece from Central Europe of popular craftsmanship, halfway between a nuptial chest and a bride's chest, representative of folk art and the Carpathians in the 19th century. In the Carpathian tradition, this type of chest — "bride's chest" — was part of the trousseau that a young woman brought to her marriage. It contained linen, embroidered textiles, and small household items. The painted motifs — tulips, bouquets, and garlands — are not decorative by chance: in Hungarian iconography, the tulip is an identity emblem, a symbol of fertility and new life, a constant in 19th-century folk art. It is constructed from pine boards joined with dovetail joints at the corners and reinforced with internal crosspieces. The flat lid opens on forged iron hinges and retains its original lock plate. The front, divided into two framed panels, and the sides have been decorated in tempera on a dark background with garlands of red, blue, and white tulips, green leaves, and ribbons.
