This large 18th-century blanket chest was recently found near Vielsalm, in the Belgian Ardennes. It is a so-called six plank chest, simply made from six solid walnut planks. Over the centuries, the wood has developed a beautiful patina, which, together with the characteristic signs of use, gives the chest a lived-in and authentic character. The front is deeply carved with, among other things, compass roses, motifs often used in folk art as symbols for protection against evil influences. There are three old repairs visible on the lid, testifying to a long history of use. The chest still has its original fittings and stands on its original legs. Thanks to its generous size, this characterful piece is not only suitable as a blanket chest, but also excellent to use as a sideboard, hallway furniture or at the foot of a bed.
